About SpellKitty

What it is

A daily spelling round for children in grades 1 to 8. The kitty says a word and what it means; the child holds a button and says the letters; the letters land one by one and are checked on the device. It practices this week’s spelling test from a list a grown-up types, or words from school spelling bee study lists. The daily round is free every day; SpellKitty Pro is one purchase, paid once. It is on the App Store, listed in Apple’s Kids category with the age rating 4+.

Who makes it

Avadh Dwivedi, an interaction and motion designer in Lucknow, India, who has designed apps at Ola, Gojek and ELSA. SpellKitty is independent: no company behind it but his own, no investors, and no affiliation with Scripps or any spelling bee organization. The kitty, its voice lines, the word meanings and the sentences were written and drawn for the app.

Why a kitty that listens

The week’s spelling list is read aloud at a kitchen table every night, by whoever is free. SpellKitty takes that job: it reads the word, waits, and hears the letters, so a child can practice alone and a grown-up can check the result later. Spelling out loud is also how a spelling bee is done, so the app keeps a bee’s habits: the word, its meaning, a sentence, where it comes from, and one more try after a miss.

What it does not do

No account, no ads, no analytics, no tracking. Spelling is judged on the device by Apple’s speech engine and no audio is recorded or sent. The App Store privacy label is Data Not Collected, and the privacy policy says the same in plain words. Anything meant for a grown-up sits behind a grown-up’s check.
