Spelling tests and bees, grades 1 to 8

Spelling practice your child can do on their own.

A kitty reads each word, listens while your child spells it out loud, and cheers when it’s right. No more reading the list aloud every night.

You stop being the spelling quiz.

SpellKitty does the reading, the listening and the checking, so practice can happen while you make dinner.

It reads the words for you

The kitty says each word and what it means. Hear again gives it in a sentence, then, for most words, where it comes from, the way a bee pronouncer does.

It checks every letter, so you don’t

Your child holds the button and spells out loud. Each letter lands on the screen as it is said, and the iPhone checks it on the spot. Nothing waits for you to mark it.

It stays kind when it’s hard

A miss gets a second try, and younger spellers see which letter to check. Then the kitty shows the right word, never the wrong one, says which letter went wrong, and the word comes back in practice.

It keeps them going without you

If your child gets stuck, the kitty gently says what to do next. No voice right now? They can type the letters instead.

A little every day, no nagging

Six words a day, a streak to keep, and a reminder at the time you pick. Missed one day? A round of the words they got wrong mends the streak.

You can see what they know

Your words keeps every word your child has met, how each one went, and the ones to practice first.

Try a word.

This is a round the way the app plays it. Spell three to see how a round ends.

On the iPhone, your child holds the button and spells out loud. Here, type the letters.

Friday’s spelling test, sorted.

Type or paste this week’s words once. The kitty reads them out, your child spells them, and the words they miss come back in practice.

  1. Add the week’s words. Up to thirty, with a meaning after a dash if you like.
  2. Your child plays them six at a time, with the same two tries as every round.
  3. Missed words come back in practice until they’re right.

with a link or a code.

Your first list is free, and so is any list a teacher or another family shares with you. More lists of your own come with SpellKitty Pro. To share, a grown-up sends the link or shows the code: the words travel inside the link, and nothing is uploaded.

Questions parents ask.

What age is SpellKitty for?

Children in grades 1 to 8, from about age 6; a five-year-old can play with a grown-up. Apple’s age rating for it is 4+. The words follow the school grade: ages 5 to 8 get the grades 1 to 3 list, 9 to 11 grades 4 to 6, and 12 and up grades 7 and 8.

What’s free, and what does Pro cost?

The daily round of six words is free every day, with no trial that runs out. So are your first spelling list, any list someone shares with you, and a practice round of missed words each day. SpellKitty Pro is one purchase, with no subscription, at the price the App Store shows for your country: it keeps every list you type, opens practice as often as your child likes, and lets them keep going after the day’s six. Family Sharing is on. Your child never sees a price: a grown-up’s question stands in front of the purchase.

Can it practice my child’s weekly spelling test?

Yes. Type or paste the week’s words, up to thirty, with a meaning after a dash if you like. The kitty says each word and your child spells it out loud, six at a time. Your first list is free; more lists come with SpellKitty Pro. Opening a shared list is always free.

Is SpellKitty safe for my child?

SpellKitty collects no personal information from anyone, child or adult. Its App Store privacy label is Data Not Collected. There are no ads and no account. Spelling is judged on the device, and no audio is recorded or sent. A grown-up check stands in front of purchases, sharing, the spelling lists, Settings and sign-in.

Which words will my child get?

Words for their grade: the grades 1 to 3 list for ages 5 to 8, grades 4 to 6 for ages 9 to 11, and grades 7 and 8 from age 12, with a few words a step harder each day. Change it any time in Settings.

The kitty can’t hear us. What now?

SpellKitty listens only while the button is held. If the microphone was turned off, open Settings › SpellKitty and allow the Microphone and Speech Recognition, or tap “Type instead”.

What does SpellKitty Pro add, and how do I restore it?

Pro is one purchase, paid once, that keeps any number of lists, opens practice as often as your child likes, and lets a player keep going after the day’s six words. On a new iPhone or iPad, or after a reinstall, open Settings › Restore purchases with the same Apple Account. Family Sharing is on.

What does it need?

An iPhone with iOS 18 or an iPad with iPadOS 18, or later, and the microphone while the button is held. With a keyboard on iPad, the space bar is the button.
